The tragedy of this past week's massacre in Mumbai adds yet another chapter to the specific targetting of Jews and Jewish centers by terrorist groups. It has become an all too familiar pattern-just as we begin to think this has ended, it happens yet again. I have earlier expressed my anger at this occurrence, but now, I've moved on to despair. Despair at both the inevitability of these actions and despair at the callous reaction of many to these occurrences.
The familiar refrain went up from the usual suspects-both virulently anti-semitic leaders like Mahmoud Ahmenijead as well as some left wing anti-zionist types have 'denounced' what happenned while still making sure to note that the attacks were understandable. Why? Well, Israel of course. The catch-all 'explanation' for all sins that have been brought upon the Jews of the world since 1948. It's the great terrorist get out of jail free card and it gets tossed down as often as a Jew gets blown up or shot.
However, the fact remains that even if Israel finalized a peace deal with the Palestinians, even if they ended their hostilities with Syria and even if they somehow convinced the Arab and Muslim world that they are ready to live in peace, these attacks wouldn't stop. And the excuses for them wouldn't stop either.
So, today, I simply mourn. For those who died and will continue to die because they are Jews. And for those who put their political agenda ahead of their humanity.
