It continues to amaze me how some of the best political insight and discussion in our country comes not from the news media, but from a comedian. Perhaps it's unfair to call Jon Stewart just a comedian at this point, but that is his career of choice and he has repeatedly noted that his show is on the same network as shows like South Park. Which makes the clip below all the more impressive.
Mike Huckabee vs. Jon Stewart on gay marriage
It's quite clear Stewart has a very well reasoned argument for gay marriage and has also considered the argument of those who oppose it. What impresses me most about this clip is not the content of his position, but his ability to maintain his composure despite the fact that the arguement Huckabee makes clearly holds little water with him.
And with that respect, I must also give Mike Huckabee credit as well. I wholeheartedly disagree with his views on almost every matter, but he too comes off well by giving Stewart the courtesy of not talking over him or insulting him for his opinions.
Perhaps I expect too little with regard to political debate these days, but seeing this clip was a welcome respite from the hyper partisanship that the news media generally engages in.
